ORLANDO – The University of Cincinnati cheerleading team and The Bearcat mascot repeated as national champions this weekend at the 2023 College Cheerleading and Dance National Championship at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex.
The cheer team captured the Division IA Coed Cheer Game Day national championship with a score of 97.8 in the finals, vaulting from third-place after the semifinals to win its second straight national title and third overall since 2018.
UC edged Tennessee and USF for first-place honors.
A few hours after the cheerleading team proved to be the nation's best, the Bearcat also went back-to-back as the national champion.
Donning a fireman costume and performing a hilarious routine that featured various props and dances to pop hits from Cardi B and Chamillionaire – among others, the Cincy Bearcat had a score of 88.8 to grab first-place ahead of the mascots of Tennessee and Auburn, who rounded out the top three.
Along with Director of Spirit Programs Tabby Fagan, mascot coach Chris Helmers and assistant coaches Tim Murphy and Johnny Downey led the set up and choreography for the routines for the national champions.
