CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati football team fell to Iowa State, 30-10, during a windy and rainy Homecoming contest at Nippert Stadium.
The Cyclones were led by redshirt freshman quarterback Rocco Becht, who completed 15-of-25 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.
Iowa State's stingy 3-3-5 defense held Cincinnati to a season-low 214 total yards and forced UC signal-caller Emory Jones to throw a pair of interceptions.
"Tough one today," head coach Scott Satterfield said. "I give credit to Matt [Campbell], his staff and his team. They came out and played a really good game. "…shooting ourselves in the foot when you play a good quality team, it's going to be hard to overcome that.
"I thought their coverage there in the fourth quarter, we never got free, our guys couldn't get open and we struggled to get first downs after that point. So, we really couldn't get back in the game, but credit to Iowa State and their team. I think they've gotten a lot better and they've grown over the season. They're a tough team to beat when making the mistakes we made today."
The Cyclones also pulled off a successful fake field goal that led to a touchdown.
The Bearcats were led by defensive back Deshawn Pace (10 tackles) and outside linebacker Daniel Grzesiak (two sacks).
Jones finished with 72 of Cincinnati's 115 rushing yards.
Iowa State struck first in the game after Jones threw an interception to Cyclones cornerback T.J. Tampa midway through the first quarter. The pick led to a 30-yard field goal from ISU kicker Chase Contreraz to make the score 3-0 at the 5:31 mark in the first quarter.
Cincinnati' offense got rolling briefly on its third drive of the first quarter, marching down the field to take a 7-3 lead. Jones engineered a 10-play, 75-yard drive, converting a 4th-and-1 rush, before finding tight end Chamon Metayer for a 20-yard touchdown snag with 42 seconds left in the first frame.
The Cyclones answered back with a fake field goal from the 33-yard line as holder Tyler Perkins flipped the ball to Contreraz who rumbled six yards on 4th-and-5 to set up Becht's 2-yard rush a few plays later. The score put Iowa State ahead 10-7 with 7:48 remaining before the break and gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish.
Later in the second quarter, Becht completed a 75-yard pass to Jayden Higgins to set up his 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Benjamin Brahmer that gave Iowa State a 17-7 lead at the break.
The Cyclones increased their lead to 20-7 on the opening drive of the third quarter on a 34-yard field goal by Contreraz at the 10:35 mark.
Cincinnati tacked on a field goal of its own on the ensuing position when kicker Carter Brown connected from 36 yards out to make the score 20-10 with 4:03 left in the third quarter.
Contreraz added another field goal – this one from 30 yards – with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter to extend the ISU lead to 23-10.
The Cyclones added a touchdown pass from Becht to tight end Jack Bjorn to hold a 30-10 lead with 10 minutes left.
