MORGANTOWN, W. Va.— The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team qualified for the 2023 Big 12 Championship after tying West Virginia, 1-1, on Monday inside Dick Dlsek Soccer Stadium.
Cincinnati finishes the regular season with a record of 3-7-7 (2-3-5), while West Virginia moved to 7-7-4 (5-3-2). The seven draws tied the UC record for most in a single season in program history.
The Bearcats cliched their first ever Big 12 tournament bid in their inaugural season in the conference. After the draw, Cincinnati needed an Iowa State loss to Texas Tech and the Bearcats got just that. UC finished the season ninth in the Big 12 standings with 11 points. Ten teams advanced to the Big 12 Championship.
Tonight means a lot for the program," head coach Erica Demers said. "This was our goal from day one. We didn't expect to win the conference, we just wanted to be a top-10 team and get an opportunity to play in the tournament."
The Bearcats played the role of road warriors spoiling West Virginia's Senior Night. Down 1-0 late in the match, junior Laura Zemberyova saved the Bearcats post-season dreams, heading in the equalizing goal off a corner kick from fellow classmate Fran Stables.
Zemberyova scored her third goal of the season and the ninth of her career. She ties senior Ellie Flowers and sophomore Megan Smith for the team lead in goals this season.
Stables earned her fourth assist this season, tying a career high. It also marked the ninth of her career.
Cincinnati spent much of the match in its own end allowing 13 corner kicks to the Mountaineers, but goalkeeper Anna Rexford and the rest of the Bearcats' backline only allowed the one goal on 16 shots.
Rexford recorded five saves on the day and has now tailed a career high 64 this season. She also tied former Bearcat Julie McCaffery for the eighth-most saves in program history with 198.
West Virginia's took the lead in the 67th minute off an own goal from Cincinnati after both teams headed to the locker room tied 0-0.
