ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team fell to 10th-ranked NC State on Friday at the Sports and Fitness Center at the University of the Virgin Islands.
The Bearcats (2-3) battled early foul trouble and could never regain momentum in the 79-45 loss. UC will close out the 2023 Paradise Jam vs. Kentucky on Saturday (3:15 p.m. ET).
Senior Malea Williams led the Bearcats with season highs in points (15), rebounds (7) and steals (2). She went a career-best 3-of-6 from three-point range.
Freshman Brianna Byars gave the Bearcats valuable minutes off the bench. She pulled down a season-high and team-high eight rebounds to go along with two blocks in 26 minutes of action.
Cincinnati shot a season-low 24.2 percent from the field (16-66 FG) and made five three-pointers (.185).
NC State finished 43.8 percent from the floor (28-64 FG) and 31.8 percent from behind the arc (7-22 3FG). The Wolfpack held a plus-12 advantage in rebounds (51-39) and plus-24 advantage in points in the paint (34-10).
Williams had all 10 of Cincinnati's points to start the game, including a pair of three-pointers to even the score at 10 all. NC State then went on a 12-2 run to lead by 12 at the end of the first quarter (26-14).
The Bearcats were held scoreless for nearly five minutes until Williams connected on her third three-pointer with 7:25 left in the second quarter (30-17). The Wolfpack outscored the Bearcats 24-8 in the period to lead at the break (50-22).
Cincinnati would not get any closer for the remainder of the game, falling to NC State 79-45. Reagan Jackson (10 points) and A'riel Jackson (7 points) combined for 17 points in the second half.
