CINCINNATI – Junior running back Corey Kiner eclipsed 1,000 yards for the season, but the Cincinnati football team fell to Kansas, 49-16, in the regular season finale.
Kansas quarterback Jason Bean finished with 340 yards of total offense and four total touchdowns to lead the Jayhawks (8-4, 5-4).
Fifth-year senior Ryan Montgomery caught a touchdown and threw for a touchdown on his first career pass fo for UC (3-9, 1-8 in the Big 12).
Kiner tallied 106 yards on 18 carries for his sixth 100-yard game of the season, which tied for the fifth-most in a single season in school history. The Cincinnati native finished the season with 1,047 yards to mark the 20th 1,000-yard rushing season in school history. In the process he became the 13th different Bearcat to rush for 1,000 yards and the first Cincinnati native to reach the mark since Richard Hall in 2004.
Kiner and the entire starting offensive line all have at least one year of eligibility remaining and are expected to return next season, giving the Bearcats a foundation to build on, despite the disappointing season.
"One thing I told our team was that I apologized to our seniors, we didn't have the kind of year that they deserved and I feel for them from the bottom of my heart," head coach Scott Satterfield said. "I said we're going to help those guys out in any way we can in the future as far as jobs or hoping they keep playing. I told the freshmen and the underclassmen that we will get to work this winter as soon as they get back and it's going to be hard. It's going to be really hard on us coaches as well as the players. But they want that, so this winter is going to be extremely difficult."
Kansas led 21-10 at halftime and used an 8-play, 75-yard drive to take a 28-10 lead on a 30-yard touchdown run from running back Devin Neal, who finished with 106 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.
Cincinnati answered to get Carter Brown into field goal position, but his 41-yard attempt was wide right at 5:57 in the third quarter.
After forcing Kansas to punt, Cincinnati fought back with a 12-play, 67-yard drive that ended with Montgomery throwing the first pass of his career – a 7-yard touchdown to sixth-year senior receiver Dee Wiggins. Quarterback Emory Jones sprinted and dove towards the pylon on the two-point attempt, but he lost the ball right before. Still, the trick play brought the Bearcats within 12, 28-16, with just under 13 minutes left in the game.
However, Bean sprinted for touchdowns of 47 yards and 50 yards on consecutive possessions to keep Kansas in control for good.
Cincinnati scored first in the game with Brown drilling a 49-yard field goal to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead. UC converted a 4th-and-1 on the drive on a quarterback keeper by Jones.
Cincinnati forced Kansas to punt on its first two drives, but quarterback Brady Lichtenberg tossed an interception on a deep shot in the second quarter.
On the first play after the takeaway, Bean completed a 40-yard pass along the sideline to wide receiver Luke Grimm. Four plays later, Neal scored on a 13-yard touchdown run to put the Jayhawks in front 7-3 with 8:55 remaining the second quarter.
After forcing a 3-and-out on the Bearcats, the Jayhawks quickly marched 66 yards on five plays. Bean completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jared Casey that put Kansas in front 14-3 at 5:31 before halftime.
The Bearcats found the end zone towards the end of the first half when Jones lofted a pass to Montgomery who trotted in for paydirt untouched to make the score 14-10 just 31 seconds ahead of the break.
However, two quick, long pass plays from Bean, including a 26-yard scoring pass to tight end Mason Fairchild, gave Kansas a 21-10 advantage with five seconds left in the first half.
