CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team cruised past Tennessee State on Friday night inside Fifth Third Arena.
The Bearcats (4-3) used a 19-point second quarter in which they outscored the Tigers 19-4 to claim the 76-52 victory.
Cincinnati received valuable contributions from freshmen duo Reagan Jackson and Brianna Byars, who combined for 31 points in the win. Reagan Jackson, making her first career start, led all scorers with a career-high 18 points. She went a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
Byars chipped in a career-high 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting to go along with six rebounds.
Senior Jillian Hayes recorded her third double-double of the season, 16th of her career, with 15 points and 11 rebounds. She went 5-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.
The Bearcats shot 39.3% from the field (24-61 FG) and connected on four three-pointers (.200). UC had a season-high 15 assists on their 24 field goals made. The Bearcats also made a season-high 24 free throws on 29 attempts (.828).
Tennessee State finished 35.7% from the floor (20-56 FG) and 23.1% from three-point range (.231). The Bearcats pulled down a season-high 51 rebounds for a plus-26 advantage on the glass (51-25).
Cincinnati trailed 8-7 at the first quarter media timeout. Byars notched four quick points to put UC up 11-10. The Tigers then scored back-to-back buckets to lead 16-13 with 2:04 on the clock. Cincinnati outscored TSU 6-1 to finish the quarter with a two-point advantage (19-17).
After allowing a layup to start the second quarter, Cincinnati's defense did not give up another field goal for the remainder of the half (1-11 FG). The Bearcats went on a 19-2 run to lead 38-21 at the break. UC forced five TSU turnovers during the stretch.
Reagan Jackson and Hayes led the Bearcats with nine points apiece in the first half.
The Bearcats continued to pour with 14 straight points to start the second half (54-23). The Tigers pulled within 17 with 8:50 in the third quarter (40-23) but would not get any closer for the remainder of the game as Cincinnati rolled to a 76-52 victory.
