Cincinnati Falls to #11 Kansas State in Big 12 Opener

The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team could not overcome a cold-shooting day, falling to 11th-ranked Kansas State in its Big 12 opener on Saturday inside Fifth Third Arena.

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team could not overcome a cold-shooting day, falling to 11th-ranked Kansas State in its Big 12 opener on Saturday inside Fifth Third Arena.
 
The Bearcats (8-4, 0-1 Big 12) shot a season-low 20% from the field in the 66-41 loss. 
 
Senior Jillian Hayes finished with a team-high 14 points – her seventh time leading the team in scoring this season. She pulled down a game-high nine boards.
 
Kansas State finished 42.6% from the floor (23-54 FG) and made seven three-pointers (.304). K-State's Gabby Gregory scored a game-high 17 points with a trio of three-pointers.

The Bearcats won the rebounding battle against one of the nation's top rebounding teams (38-36). Cincinnati, who leads the Big 12 in free throws made per game, went 18-of-24 from the charity stripe (.750). 
 
Hayes scored back-to-back buckets to give UC a 6-4 lead. A'riel Jackson hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to even the score at 11 all. The Bearcats held the Wildcats to their lowest point total in an opening quarter this season.
 
Kansas State scored the first four points of the second quarter (15-11). The Wildcats later used an 8-0 run to lead by 10 (23-13). The Bearcats were held to just three points in the quarter to trail at the break (29-14).
 
The first-half deficit proved too large to overcome as Cincinnati fell to Kansas State, 66-41.
