CINCINNATI -- The University of Cincinnati athletics department is pleased to recognize 15 current and former student-athletes at Friday's commencement.
The ceremony is highlighted by two-time All-American Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner, who is walking the stage the day after his New York Jets play in Canton to open the NFL preseason. Gardner was UC's highest-ever draft pick at No. 4 overall in 2022 and proceeded to earn NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. He resumed classes this spring for his fourth and final year of school.
Thirteen-year NBA veteran and 2018 James P. Kelly Hall of Fame inductee Nick Van Exel, who led UC to the 1992 Final Four and 1993 Elite Eight in his two years in Clifton, has also completed his degree and will be joined by his family. He averaged 15.2 points and 3.6 assists per game for the Bearcats and was an NBA All-Star for the Lakers in 1998.
Van Exel is the eighth former men's basketball player that UC's Student-Athlete Support Services department has helped graduate since 2018 and the 30th-straight senior grad in the program since 2013-14.
