CINCINNATI – Behind sophomore A'riel Jackson's late-game heroics, the University of Cincinnati women's basketball team pulled out a thrilling 64-63 win over UCF on Wednesday night in Fifth Third Arena.
Down by one with 14 seconds remaining (63-62), A'riel Jackson made the game-winning putback as time expired to give UC the win.
With the win, the Bearcats (9-6, 1-3 Big 12) earned their first-ever Big 12 Conference victory.
Senior Malea Williams recorded her third career double-double with a career-high 17 points (7-11 FG) to go along with 11 rebounds. Sophomore Braylyn Milton added 12 points, including nine in the first quarter on 3-of-4 shooting from behind the arc.
Senior Jillian Hayes finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. She became just the eighth player in program history to surpass 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in their career.
Cincinnati shot 38.3% (23-60 FG) from the floor and 42.1% from 3-point range (8-19 3FG). The Bearcats made five three-pointers (.455) and were plus-four on the glass in the second half (17-13).
UCF finished 39% from the field (23-59 FG) and made just three three-pointers (.167). UCF's Kaitlin Peterson scored 35 of the Knights' 63 points.
Cincinnati jumped out to a 7-2 lead after a Milton three-pointer. UCF then went on a 7-0 run to take the lead (9-7). The Bearcats responded with 10 straight, including a pair of 3-pointers from Milton (17-9). UCF converted an and-one to end the first quarter down by five (17-12).
The Bearcats' defense held the Knights without a field goal for seven minutes in the second quarter. A'riel Jackson made a jumper with time expiring to give the Bearcats a five-point lead at the break (28-23).
Hayes went on a personal 6-0 run in the third quarter – highlighted by an and-one where she pulled down her 700th career rebound. Cincinnati made four three-pointers in the third quarter to own a six-point edge (49-43).
