PROVO, Utah – The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team pulled within three late in the third quarter before ultimately falling to BYU, 68-58, on Saturday night in Provo, Utah.
The Bearcats (9-7, 1-4 Big 12) could not overcome a second quarter in which the Cougars scored 25 points.
Coming off a 17-point, 11-rebound outing on Wednesday, senior Malea Williams scored a game-high 15 points to go along with seven rebounds. She tied her career-high in three-pointers made with four in the performance.
Senior Jillian Hayes finished with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds while junior Braylyn Milton added 10 points (2-4 3FG).
Cincinnati shot 33.9% from the floor (20-59 FG) and 46.7% from 3-point range (7-15 3FG). The Bearcats pulled down 13 offensive boards but were only able to turn it into five second-chance points.
BYU finished 48.1% from the field (25-52 FG) and made eight three-pointers (.381), including six in the first half.
A back-and-forth first quarter saw five lead changes and two ties. The Bearcats went on a 7-2 run to lead 12-9 with two minutes remaining in the quarter. BYU scored the final two baskets to own a slim one-point advantage (13-12).
BYU made five three-pointers in the second quarter to take a 12-point lead into the break (38-26). The Cougars shot 50.0 percent in the first half behind six three-pointers (.462).
Cincinnati scored the first seven points of the second half (38-33). Milton and Williams each knocked down a three-pointer to cut the deficit to five with 1:36 remaining in the third quarter (47-42).
The Bearcats pulled within three with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter (47-44) but would not get any closer for the remainder of the game, falling 68-58. Williams had 10 of her 15 points in the second half.
