TicketsCINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team started their 2024 schedule off by picking up two victories, a 4-0 win over Chicago State and a 7-0 win over Southern Indiana on Saturday afternoon at the Western Athletic Club.
"I thought it was a good day overall. We have a brand-new team. We only had one returning starter in the lineup from last year, so that means we had five new singles starters and three brand-new doubles teams. I thought it worked out really well," head coach Eric Toth said. "We don't do these doubleheaders a lot and the kids had the right attitude, they did everything we asked them to do today. So, it's a great start to the season."
Cincinnati 4, Chicago State 0
Cincinnati quickly clinched the doubles point with two dominant matches. Sophomore Rozalia Gruszcynska and freshman Gabrielle Gunther scored a 6-1 victory over Sofiya Sedovich, followed by the freshman duo of Morgan Pyrz and Sakurako Watanabe securing the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Katarina Dukic and Manuella Eloundou.
In singles, Watanabe was the first Bearcat to notch a win, taking the match, 6-2, 6-2, over Eloundou. Gruszczynska added a 6-1, 6-4 win against Dukic, while Callie Flanagan was not far behind by with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Ethel LI to clinch the match.
Cincinnati 7, Southern Indiana 0
Cincinnati quickly turned it's attention over to the Screaming Eagles and immediately recorded the doubles point. Flanagan and sophomore Isabel Pacheco cruised to a victory against Abby Myers and Madison Windham, 6-0. Gruszczynska and Guenther notched a 6-1 win over Rachel McCorkle and Lauren Rowe. Pyrz and Watanabe also gathered a 6-1 win on their court over Antonia Ferrarini and Sofia Davidoff.
The Bearcats dominated the singles play with multiple 6-0, 6-1 sets. Pyrz finished first winning 6-0, 6-1. Guenther recorded two unblemished sets winning both her sets 6-0. Gruszczynska finished seconds after with 6-0, 6-1 wins herself.
Flanagan picked up her second victory of the day after another impressive showing, winning 6-1, 6-2. Pacheco picked up a victory taking her sets 6-3, 6-2. Play was concluded by Watanabe's 6-2, 6-2 wins on court six against Antonia Ferrarini.

The Bearcats will host Western Illinois on Friday, Jan. 26, at the Western Athletic Club. Game time against the Deacons is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
