HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team dropped a road contest to Houston, 54-46, on Tuesday night inside the Fertitta Center.
The Bearcats (10-10, 2-7 Big 12) went without a field goal for the final 4:44 minutes as their comeback attempt fell short.
Cincinnati struggled offensively, shooting 30.4% from the floor (17-56 FG) and 16.7% from 3-point range (2-12 3FG). The Bearcats also committed 23 turnovers which resulted in 23 points for the Cougars.
Texas native Reagan Jackson turned in 13 points (6-12 FG), including 11 in the second quarter, while sophomore A'riel Jackson scored a season-high 13 points (4-11 FG). It marked the second straight game the duo led the team in scoring.
The Bearcats owned a plus-10 advantage on the glass (48-38) and pulled down 20 offensive boards but could only turn that into 10 second-chance points.
Houston jumped out to an early advantage before UC rattled off seven straight points, including back-to-back baskets from A'riel Jackson (7-6). Ta'Ziah Jenks beat the buzzer to even the score at the end of the first (11-11). The Bearcats pulled down 11 offensive boards in the first 10 minutes but it only translated into three second-chance points.
The Cougars scored the first six points of the second quarter (17-11). Reagan Jackson then drained back-to-back jumpers at the media timeout (19-15). Reagan Jackson would go on to score all 11 of the Bearcats' points in the quarter (26-22).
Houston used a fast start to extend its advantage to eight out of the break (30-22). The Bearcats pulled within two after back-to-back buckets from Jillian Hayes and Jenks with six minutes remaining (32-30). Cincinnati committed seven of its 23 turnovers in the third quarter to trail by six (42-36).
Down by as many as nine in the final quarter, UC cut its deficit to four at the final media timeout (47-43). The comeback attempt fell short as the Bearcats went without a field goal for the final 4:44 minutes (54-46).
