CINCINNATI— University of Cincinnati women's soccer star defender Ashley Barron is set to begin her professional career in Örebro, Sweden, as she signed a one-year contract with KIF Örebro DFF on Thursday.

Barron is the first Bearcat player to sign with a professional club since former Bearcat Madison Less began her professional career with BIIK Shymkent in 2021.

The KIF Örebro DFF club plays in the Swedish Damallsvenskan League, the highest division of women's soccer in Sweden. Barron will be under contract with the club for the 2024 season.

Barron ended her five-year career as one of the best to ever don a Bearcat uniform. She became the first Bearcat and American Athletic Conference player to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors in three straight seasons and earned four straight AAC All-Conference First Team honors.

The Toledo, Ohio native played a career-high 1,694 minutes this past season, bringing her career total to 7,111, the second most in program history. She joined only Giles and Kayla Utley as the only Bearcats to record over 7,000 career minutes played as non-goalkeepers.

She started in 81 of her 82 career games, the ninth most in school history, and started every game since early in the 2019 season (76 games).  Even as a defender, she still made her presence known on offense, scoring five career goals and recording five assists, including assisting on the game-winning goal against Baylor in the first round of the 2023 Big 12 Soccer Championship Tournament to earn Cincinnati its first very Big 12 Tournament victory.
