CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's swimming and diving senior Hunter Gubeno will head to the 2024 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships after qualifying in the 200-yard backstroke.
"As a senior and first-time NCAA qualifier, I think Hunter tells a great story about pursuing your dreams and never giving up on finding ways to get better." Head coach Mandy Commons-Disalle said. "I am excited for him to experience racing at this level and watch him compete against the best college swimmers in the nation."
The NCAA Men's Championships will kick off March 27-30 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. The event is hosted by Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and the Indiana Sports Corporation.
Gubeno qualified for the 200-yard backstroke at the 2024 Big 12 Championships with a time of 1:39.95. This time earned him the silver medal at the conference championships and set a new school record, previously set by former Bearcat and assistant coach Blake Hanna.
This fall, the Howell, Mich. native was inducted into the Legions of Excellence. Additionally, he clinched the title of Big 12 Men's Swimmer of the Week and contributed to two school record-breaking relays, the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay. Throughout his senior season, he registered nine individual event victories.
Gubeno has made a strong impact during his time at Cincinnati. He has set three school records (200-yard backstroke, 100-yard individual medley, 200-yard individual medley), and recorded the second-fastest time in program history in the 50-yard backstroke (21.66), 100-yard backstroke (46.86) and 200-yard freestyle (1:35.67).
