LOUISVILLE, KY. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team visited Louisville on Tuesday and wound up on the losing end of an 11-5 decision.
The game started off as an offensive battle as both teams scored at least one run in each of the first three innings, and the score was tied at 5-5 after three. A rain delay in the middle of the fourth inning halted the game for nearly an hour, however, and the Bearcats (15-11) were unable to push any runs across after play resumed. The Cardinals, meanwhile, scored three in the bottom of the fourth and three in the bottom of the fifth to pull ahead 11-5, which would hold as the final score.
Josh Kross continued to swing the bat well on Tuesday, going 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run home run. He now has 10 homers on the year, which ties him with Texas' Max Belyeu for most in the Big 12.
Alec Jones also left the yard, hitting his second home run of the season, and Kerrington Cross had a two-hit day at the plate.
Six different pitchers saw time on the mound on Tuesday. Joey Hurth pitched the final two innings, striking out two in two scoreless frames.
Cincinnati resumes Big 12 play this weekend with a three-game series at Baylor. The series between the Bearcats and Bears begins on Thursday at 7:30 PM.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Josh Kross gave UC an early lead with an RBI double in the top of the first. Lauden Brooks led off the game with a base hit and scored from first on the two-bagger by Kross to make it 1-0. Louisville responded with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. An RBI fielder's choice tied the game and a two-run double down the line in right field gave UL the lead.
UC tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the second on a two-run homer from Alec Jones. After Landyn Vidourek led off the inning with a walk, Jones launched an 0-1 pitch over the fence in center field for his second home run of the year.
The offensive barrage continued as Louisville reclaimed the lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the second, but the lead didn't last long. Kross absolutely demolished a two-run home run to left field in the top of the third to give UC a 5-4 lead.
The Cardinals tied the score once again in the bottom of the third on a solo homer, and when they kept the Bearcats from scoring in the top of the fourth it was the first scoreless half-inning for either team. A nearly hour-long rain delay followed, and when play resumed Louisville scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead.
The Bearcats were unable to find their offensive spark following the delay, and the Cardinals plated three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-5. That would hold as the final score as neither team scored again before the game ended.
