WACO, Texas – The University of Cincinnati baseball team opened its series at Baylor with an 8-3 win on Thursday night.
The Bearcats (16-11, 4-3 Big 12) benefitted from a couple stellar performances from Tommy O'Connor and Seth Logue.
O'Connor drove in half of UC's runs, going 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI. He homered in the third and seventh innings to collect his first career multi-homer game and the fifth by a Bearcat hitter this season.
After entering the game with two outs in the bottom of the second, Logue proceeded to shut down the Baylor bats for the next 6.1 frames. The Mason, Ohio native struck out eight and walked just one, setting season highs in innings pitched and punchouts.
Lauden Brooks, Kerrington Cross, and Christian Mitchelle all drove in runs for Cincinnati as well.
Game two between the Bearcats and Bears is set for Friday at 7:30 PM ET.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
The first runs of the game came home on Tommy O'Connor's three-run homer in the top of the third. Dalton Pearson reached on a one-out double and Lauden Brooks walked to put two runners on for O'Connor, who crushed his seventh home run of the year out to right field. Kerrington Cross singled home Alec Jones on a base hit up the middle in the top of the fifth to increase the lead to 4-0.
The four runs provided by O'Connor and Cross were more than enough while Seth Logue was on the mound. The senior right-hander retired the first five hitters he faced and stranded Baylor runners on base to end the fourth and fifth innings.
O'Connor launched his second home run of the game in the top of the seventh, and later in the inning a bunt single by Christian Mitchelle allowed Josh Kross to score and up the lead to 6-0.
Logue posted 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh, and his teammates provided more insurance runs in the top of the eighth. Landyn Vidourek scored on an error and in the next at-bat Brooks poked a single through the right side of the infield to bring home Pearson and make it 8-0.
Logue left the game with an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth, though Baylor scored three runs before the final out was recorded. The three runs proved to be inconsequential as UC had built a large enough lead and came away with an 8-3 victory.
