WACO, Texas – The University of Cincinnati baseball team wrapped up its series at Baylor on Saturday, falling to the Bears by a score of 9-2.
UC (16-13, 4-5 Big 12) struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. But Baylor responded in a big way, scoring two runs in the first and four in the second to go up 6-1. The Bearcats' offensive well ran dry for much of the game as they didn't find the scoreboard again until the eighth inning, but by then they weren't able to overcome the deficit.
Lauden Brooks and Tommy O'Connor were the lone UC batters to record hits on Saturday, and Brooks had the only Cincinnati RBI.
Five different pitchers saw time on the mound for the Bearcats, with Christian Mitchelle providing the best outing of the day. He started the game at shortstop, but threw 2.2 scoreless frames in relief in the middle of the contest before returning to play shortstop.
Cincinnati will face Xavier on Tuesday in the Joe Nuxhall Classic at Prasco Park in Mason. First pitch is set for 6 PM. UC will then return home to host TCU next weekend, April 3-5.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Cincinnati scored the first run of the game in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Lauden Brooks walked to lead off the contest and later scored on a Baylor error. After Tommy O'Connor's base hit fell safely in left field, Brooks slid into third but popped back up and scampered home after an errant throw from the outfield.
Baylor responded with two runs in the bottom half of the first, both coming on a two-out double, to take a 2-1 lead. The Bears continued to add to their lead with a four-run bottom of the second and added another run in the third to go up, 7-1.
The Bearcats were unable to get anything going offensively for much of the game, though they broke through with a run in the top of the eighth. Landyn Vidourek walked to open the inning, then Christian Mitchelle walked to put runners on first and second. Brooks singled into left field to bring home Vidourek and make it 7-2, but UC wasn't able to push any more runs across that inning.
A two-run Baylor home run in the bottom of the eighth pushed its lead back up to seven runs, 9-2, and that would hold as the final score.
