CINCINNATI – Cincinnati football welcomed 17 transfers, 10 early enrollee freshmen and two new full-time assistant coaches on Monday to Nippert Stadium for a sunny, 75-degree first spring practice.

The Bearcats held a spirited two-hour practice in shorts to kick off Day 1 of the 15-practice spring session.

UC head coach Scott Satterfield begins his second spring at the helm of the Bearcats with plenty of leaders returning from last season's squad, including every offensive line starter as well as team leaders: nose tackle Dontay Corleone, linebacker Jack Dingle and wide receiver Xzavier Henderson – among others.

The influx of new faces will create plenty of competition at nearly every position, including quarterback – which features returners redshirt junior Brady Lichtenburg and redshirt freshman Brady Drogosh battling Indiana transfer and redshirt sophomore Brendan Sorsby and true freshman early enrollee Samaj Jones for quarterback reps.

"It was an awesome winter," Satterfield said. "Coach Niko (Palazeti) and his staff did a tremendous job for the two months and we had great buy-in from our guys there in the wintertime. To be able to put a ball down and watch these guys fly around, it's fun to see.

"There are some new coaches out here, so to watch those guys go out there and coach and you know, see the defense fly around making some plays (was great). Overall, I think it's fun, it's great to be out here. We had a couple of recruits in today and this is a totally normal day for Cincinnati in March, 75 and sunny. So we're excited to see the great weather today as well. But I think overall it was a great day."

Satterfield added former Iowa State associate head coach Tyson Veidt as defensive coordinator and former Memphis assistant Sean Dawkins as running backs coach.

Veidt was one of the architects of the top defense in the Big 12. Since Veidt joined the Cyclones' staff in 2016, Iowa State has led the Big 12 in scoring defense (23.2), total defense (354.7), yards per play allowed (5.3), rushing yards allowed (133.4) and yards per carry allowed (3.8).

Veidt will have Corleone, an All-American in 2022, as the lynchpin of his defense as well as returning starters Dingle and defensive end Eric Philips and a host of defensive newcomers, including safeties Derrick Canteen (Georgia Southern, Virginia Tech) and Kye Stokes (Ohio State), defensive ends Mikah Coleman (Eastern Michigan) and Darian Varner (Temple, Wisconsin) and linebacker Jared Bartlett (West Virginia).

In addition to every offensive line starter back from the nation's fifth-ranked rushing offense, Dawkins gets to coach 1,000-yard back and rising senior Corey Kiner. The Cincinnati native returned for his final year following his 1,047-yard rushing season, securing the 20th 1,000-yard season in UC history. His 1,047-yard total marked the 13th-best mark in school history. He finished with six 100-yard games in 2023 – tied for the fourth-most in a single season in school history.

UC will practice three times this week before taking next week off for spring break.

Cincinnati will hold its annual spring game on April 13 (time TBD).
