STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team dropped game two of its weekend series at No. 21 Oklahoma State on Saturday night by a score of 12-5.
The Bearcats (20-15, 7-7 Big 12) scored the first run of the game in their first trip to the plate, but the Cowboys (24-11, 9-5 Big 12) responded with a grand slam in the bottom of the first and never looked back. A seven-run bottom of the fifth extended their lead yet again and UC was unable to overcome the large deficit.
Tommy O'Connor and Kerrington Cross each had two hits and two RBI on Saturday, and Josh Hegemann went 2-for-4 with a run driven in. Christian Mitchelle registered two hits as well.
Five different Bearcat pitchers saw time on the mound in game two, with Bradley Coulter having the best outing of the bunch. He struck out four in 2.0 innings out of the bullpen.
First pitch for Sunday's series finale is set for 1 PM ET.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Cincinnati started off the game hot, with the first two batters of the game reaching base on singles. Tommy O'Connor drove one of those runners home on a base hit into left field to give UC a 1-0 lead. The lead didn't last long, however, as an Oklahoma State grand slam in the bottom of the first made it a 4-1 ballgame.
Oklahoma State added another run in the bottom of the fourth, but UC got that run back in the top of the fifth on a Kerrington Cross sac fly to make it 5-2. The Cowboys blew the game open in the bottom half of the fifth, batting around and scoring seven runs to go up 12-2.
O'Connor and Cross tallied RBI doubles in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, and Hegeman drove in a run in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough to get the Bearcats back in contention.
