STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team concluded its weekend series at No. 21 Oklahoma State on Sunday with a 10-6 loss vs. the Cowboys.
The Bearcats (20-16, 7-8 Big 12) started the day off on a high note, with Kerrington Cross hitting a home run on the first pitch of the game to give UC the lead. Cincinnati led, 3-2, heading into the bottom of the fifth, but OSU (25-11, 10-5 Big 12) scored eight runs over the final four innings to grab the lead and hold onto it until the end of the game.
The top of UC's lineup was quite productive, with the top three hitters in the order combining for six hits. Cross, Josh Hegemann, and Josh Kross each had two-hit days on Sunday, and both of Kross' hits were doubles. Cross scored three times out of the leadoff spot.
Tommy O'Connor went 2-for-4 at the dish with two RBI, and Christian Mitchelle hit his second home run of the season.
Cincinnati returns home with five games at UC Baseball Stadium this week. UC hosts Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday and Xavier on Wednesday before welcoming Houston for a three-game conference series next weekend.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Kerrington Cross started the game with a bang, launching the first pitch of the game over the wall in right field to give UC a 1-0 lead. Tommy O'Connor added to the lead with a two-out triple that scored Josh Kross to give Cincinnati a 2-0 advantage.
Oklahoma State hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 2-2, but an RBI double from Kross in the top of the third reclaimed the lead for the Bearcats.
A leadoff home run for the Cowboys in the bottom of the fifth tied the score at 3-3, and they took the lead three batters later on an RBI single. Christian Mitchelle led off the top of the sixth with a home run, but that would be the last time UC held a share of the lead.
Two Oklahoma State home runs in the bottom of the sixth put them ahead 7-4, and they tacked on runs in the seventh and eighth to extend their lead. Hunter Jessee and O'Connor drove in runs in the seventh to trim the deficit to one, but Cincinnati would get no closer.
