CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team hosted crosstown rival Xavier on Wednesday night and lost to the Musketeers by a score of 6-4.
UC and Xavier were tied at 4-4 after seven innings, but the Musketeers broke the tie with a two-run homer in the top of the eighth. Cincinnati had a chance to make some noise in the bottom of the ninth, putting runners at the corners, but the rally failed to produce any runs.
Hunter Jessee accounted for the majority of Cincinnati's runs on Wednesday, going 2-for-5 with three RBI. He drove in two of his runs with a first-inning home run, his second of the season.
Kerrington Cross had a two-hit day, both of his hits being doubles, and Josh Hegemann went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two walks. Luke Sefcik reached base three times, tallying a hit and two walks.
Five different pitchers saw time on the mound. Carson Marsh made his first start of the year, and both Drew Erdmann and Joey Hurth contributed multiple innings out of the bullpen.
Cincinnati returns home this weekend to host Houston in a three-game Big 12 series. First pitch for Friday's opener is set for 5 PM.

A pair of RBI singles for Xavier in the top of the second tied the score at 2-2, but UC got those runs back in the third. Josh Hegemann singled up the middle to bring home a run and later scored on a fielder's choice to give the Bearcats a 4-2 advantage.
