CINCINNATI – Sophomore Christian Mitchelle of the University of Cincinnati baseball team has been named to the watch list for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, the College Baseball Foundation announced Tuesday.
One of 23 players selected to the initial watch list, Mitchelle has made his mark on the diamond this year as an infielder and a relief pitcher.
Mitchelle has played in 36 games, making 29 starts primarily at shortstop, and is hitting .330 with 24 runs scored and 16 RBI. He ranks second on the team in batting average and his .389 batting average in Big 12 play is tops on the Bearcats. The Romeoville, Ill. native was outstanding this past weekend vs. Houston, hitting .583 with a home run and four RBI across three games.
On the mound, Mitchelle has pitched in 16 games and sports a 3.00 ERA with a team-best five saves. He has been one of head coach Jordan Bischel's most-trusted weapons out of the bullpen, ranking third on the team in pitching appearances this season. He ranks fourth in the Big 12 in saves.
The semifinalists for the Olerud Award will be announced in mid-May, with the five finalists being announced during the NCAA tournament. The winner will be announced on June 17.

The John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award is presented annually by the College Baseball Foundation to honor the nation's top combo pitcher-position player. Recent winners include Caden Grice (Clemson, 2023), Paul Skenes (Air Force, 2022), and Spencer Schwellenbach (Nebraska, 2021).
Olerud, who was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007, was a standout pitcher and first baseman at Washington State University from 1987 through 1989.
