CINCINNATI – Coming off a weekend sweep vs. TCU, the University of Cincinnati baseball team will look to keep things rolling on Tuesday when it faces Xavier at Prasco Park in the Joe Nuxhall Classic.
First pitch is set for 5 PM, an hour earlier than the original time of 6 PM. The first pitch time was moved up to avoid potential inclement weather. The game will be streamed live on Chatterbox Sports.
The Joe Nuxhall Classic is typically a four-team tournament featuring Cincinnati, Xavier, Wright State, and Miami. With last week's games being rained out, this iteration will just be a one-day event with Miami and Wright State playing first ahead of the UC vs. Xavier matchup.
Named in honor of former major league Joe Nuxhall, the tournament began in 2009 to the legendary Reds player and announcer. Nuxhall became the youngest player ever to appear in an MLB game when he took the mound for the Cincinnati Reds against the St. Louis Cardinals at Crosley Field on June 10, 1944 at the age of 15. He played for 16 years in the Major Leagues and immediately upon retiring, began a 40-year broadcasting career with the Reds.
Cincinnati is coming off an impressive series sweep of TCU this past weekend. After winning the first two games by scores of 4-2 and 6-2, UC trounced the Horned Frogs 13-2 on Sunday to claim a run-rule victory. It was the first series sweep of the season and the Bearcats' first-ever sweep since joining the Big 12.
Following Tuesday's game, Cincinnati will visit Oklahoma State for a three-game conference series this weekend.
// WHERE WE STAND
Following this weekend's series sweep of the Horned Frogs, Cincinnati's overall record sits at 19-13 and its Big 12 record is 7-5. West Virginia (19-12, 8-4 Big 12) and Oklahoma (17-14, 8-4 Big 12) are tied atop the conference standings, and UC is one of four teams one game out of first place. Kansas State (20-10, 7-5 Big 12), Oklahoma State (21-11, 7-5 Big 12), and Texas (19-13, 7-5 Big 12) are all locked in a four-way tie with the Bearcats in the standings.
// LAST TIME OUT
Cincinnati hosted TCU, the preseason favorite to win the Big 12, this past weekend and swept the Horned Frogs at UC Baseball Stadium. The Bearcats won game one, 4-2, before taking game two by a score of 6-2 to clinch the series. A dominant 13-2 run-rule victory on Sunday capped the series sweep.
There were 25 innings played this weekend and Cincinnati only trailed at the end of one of them, the fifth inning on Friday.
As impressive as the offense was, the pitching staff stifled TCU's hitters all weekend long. Brenden Garula and Seth Logue combined to strike out eight in Friday's opener, and Tommy Boba and Christian Mitchelle provided strong innings on Saturday. Nathan Taylor ended the weekend with a seven-inning complete game, striking out nine while walking none.
// LAST MEETING VS. THE MUSKETEERS
This will be the second meeting between Cincinnati and Xavier this year. The last meeting was Feb. 27 at Hayden Field and the Musketeers won, 11-9. UC led that game before Xavier used an eight-run sixth inning to jump out in front. Cincinnati couldn't complete the comeback and eventually lost by two runs. Josh Kross hit his first home run as a Bearcat in that game, and Tommy O'Connor homered as well.
