COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Cincinnati baseball team visited Ohio State on Tuesday night and fell to the Buckeyes by a score of 12-6.

The majority of the offense from both sides came in the first three innings, as UC scored five runs in the second and Ohio State scored twice in the first, twice in the second, and six times in the third. That left the Bearcats down 10-5 heading into the fourth, and while they would score a run that inning they weren't able to find the scoreboard again for the rest of the game.

Freshman Drew Erdmann was one of seven pitchers to see time on the mound on Tuesday and had his best outing of the year. He set season highs in innings pitched (3.0) and strikeouts (six), allowing just two hits and no runs.

At the plate, Tommy O'Connor and Alec Jones both hit two-run home runs, homers number 12 and three on the season, respectively. Luke Sefcik walked three times, which constitutes a new career-high total for the sophomore. Kerrington Cross reached base four times, going 2-for-3 with two walks and a couple runs scored.

Josh Kross was hit by a pitch twice on Tuesday, bringing his season total to 19. He is two away from tying the program's single season record of 21, which is held by Josh Harrison (2006).

Cincinnati returns home this weekend to host West Virginia in a three-game conference series. First pitch for Friday's opener is set for 5 PM at UC Baseball Stadium. Game two on Saturday will begin at 3 PM and the finale on Sunday is set for a 1 PM start.

// HOW IT HAPPENED
Ohio State grabbed an early lead with a two-run bottom of the first, scoring on a base hit into center field and a bases-loaded HBP, but Cincinnati responded in the top of the second.

Max Palmieri drove in the first UC run of the game with a sac fly, then Alec Jones and Tommy O'Connor launched a couple two-run homers to make it 5-2. Jones hit a two-run shot to left field, and then two batters later O'Connor obliterated one to right field.

The high-scoring affair continued in the bottom of the second as OSU scored twice to trim the lead to 5-4. A base hit into center field brought in the first run of the inning, and a sac fly to right field made it a one-run game. Ohio State continued to pile it on with a six-run third inning to put the score at 10-5.

The Bearcats got one of those runs back in the top of the fourth on a Hunter Jessee RBI single, then held the Buckeyes scoreless in the bottom of the fourth for the first time on the night.

The Bearcats' best chance to reclaim the lead came in the top of the seventh. Luke Sefcik, Josh Hegemann, and Lauden Brooks drew back-to-back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out, bringing the tying run to the plate. However, UC was not able to capitalize on that opportunity. The Buckeyes added two more runs to their total in the bottom of the eighth to bring about the 12-6 final score.
