CINCINNATI – Cincinnati fifth-year senior men's golfer Ty Gingerich, the department's first Big 12 champion, will begin play at the Purdue Regional on Monday.
The three-day, 54-hole event features 13 teams and nine individuals. The top five teams and top individual not on an qualifying team will advance to the national championship in Carlsbad, Calif. (May 24-29).
The event will be held at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex's Kampen-Cosler course, which is hosting the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals for the first time since May 2017. The course has hosted many top-flight events in the 25-year history of the course, including the 2008 men's National Championship. It has also consistently been voted one of the top courses in the state of Indiana and among the top five collegiate courses in America.
Gingerich's 72.42 career stroke average is second in program history to former teammate Sam Jean. Gingerich had three-straight birdies on the back-nine of his final round to ultimately come away with the hardware. Including his seventh-place finish at the strong Mossy Oak event in Mississippi, his top two performances this year have come at the end.
Gingerich is the eighth men's golf individual qualifier at Cincinnati, following Jean (2022), Austin Squires (2017 and 2019), David Tepe (2013), Jon Nichols (1974), Geoff Hensley (1969) and George McManis (1965).
The three-straight years of NCAA representation mark the best streak in the program's history. Jean qualified in Columbus for 2022, and the team made its first-such appearance in 2023 in Las Vegas. Jean's ninth-place finish out west is the Bearcats' highest individual spot on the NCAA stage.
It will also be a homecoming for the Russiaville, Ind., native and Guerin Catholic alum, whose father, Rex, pitched at Purdue and brother, Weston, is an active member on the team.
"The first time Coach Martin ever watched me play in high school was at the Kampen golf course," Gingerich told ESPN1530 in Cincinnati. "He watched me there as I played a junior tournament, and then we started talking over a period of a few months. I fell in love with the school, and Coach Martin and Frick with the program here and felt like this was a place I would get better. It certainly happened."
Gingerich was also honored with the first pitch at Cincinnati's May 3 baseball game against West Virginia, throwing from the mound for the first time since middle school and rifling a low strike. The Bearcats would go on to claim the crucial series.
