WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Ty Gingerich battled steady winds on a tough course to finish Monday's opening round with a 4-over 76 at the Purdue Regional. He is tied for 48th.

The greens played fast particularly in the early going. Gingerich was 2-over in the front nine, including a nice save on No. 8 to claim a bogey after a tough start. He claimed his first birdie on No. 15, giving a fist pump too after the long putt.

"I thought I played pretty tough with the wind and hole locations," Gingerich said. "It was a good test today. I just have to take it one hole at a time, and I have a good test tomorrow."

Gingerich's last two Day 2s have seen him rally back with a 70 in Mississippi and 69 at the Big 12 Championship.

The top-five teams so far (Vanderbilt, Arizona, Purdue, Florida and New Mexico) have a seven-stroke lead on the rest of the field. The top individual not on a top-five team advances to the national championship.

"I think the key is driving the ball onto the fairway," head coach Doug Martin said. "There are 6-7 holes here that you really have to take advantage of from a scoring standpoint, and another four or five that you just have to survive because of its difficulty. I thought we had a great game plan and great numbers, but it was a difficult day to score. I expect good things tomorrow, and he was ready to play today and will be tomorrow."

Tuesday's second round will see him tee off at 9:31 a.m., which includes a 30-minute move-up from the original tee times due to expected rain.
