ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The University of Cincinnati baseball team's stay at the Big 12 Championship concluded on Thursday with a 10-5 loss to No. 10 seed Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders opened the game with a three-run first inning and scored five more in the second, putting UC in an early deficit from which it could not recover.

The Bearcats' record stands at 32-25 after the loss to the Red Raiders. Following Thursday's loss, UC must wait until the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on Monday, May 27 at noon ET to learn its postseason fate.

Four of Cincinnati's runs were driven in by Alec Jones, who went 3-for-4 with a couple two-run home runs. It was the first career multi-homer game for the senior catcher and brought his season home run total to eight.

UC hitters drew four walks on Thursday, bringing the season total to 320 walks. That is a new single-season school record, topping the previous record of 319 set in 2001.

Cincinnati threw five different pitchers, with Joey Hurth putting together the best outing of the bunch. He threw 3.2 scoreless frames, retiring 11 straight batters at one point. Nathan Taylor also had a scoreless outing, pitching the eighth and ninth innings,.

// HOW IT HAPPENED
Texas Tech jumped out to an early lead with a three-run first inning. A ground-rule double brought in the first run of the game, which was followed by an infield single and a sac fly to put the Bearcats in a 3-0 hole before they had a chance to step in the batter's box.

The Red Raiders continued to pile it on in the top of the second, scoring five runs to go up 8-0. They batted around and scored on a sac fly, two bases-loaded walks, and a two-run single to increase their lead.

UC put a run on the board in the bottom of the third on a Lauden Brooks RBI double. Dalton Pearson reached on a fielder's choice and stole second, then scored easily on Brooks' two-bagger to right field.

Joey Hurth, who entered the game in the top of the second, kept Texas Tech's bats at bay for much of his outing. After recording the final out of the second inning, he went on to retired the next 10 batters he faced after 1-2-3 innings in the third, fourth, and fifth.

Alec Jones cut into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run homer to left field, his seventh of the season. That put the score at 9-3.

Texas Tech added another run in the top of the eighth, scoring on an error to push its lead to 10-3.

Jones homered again in the bottom of the ninth to make it 10-5. Josh Hegemann walked and three pitches later Jones lifted a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left field. The next two Bearcat hitters were retired, however, to end the game.
