Cincinnati Falls to Illinois in Season Opener

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio The University of Cincinnati volleyball team fell to Illinois in its season opener on Friday afternoon.

The Bearcats (0-1) were swept by the Fighting Illini in their first match of the Best Western Invitational, hosted by Bowling Green. UC will be back in action Saturday versus Chicago State at 3 p.m.
 
Sophomore Sydney Nolan led the Bearcats with a match-high 12 kills at a .303 clip in her Cincinnati debut. She added six digs and two blocks in the performance.
 
Freshmen Faith Frame and Fallon Stewart both earned the start in their collegiate debuts. Frame recorded a match-high 16 digs in the libero role.
 
Fellow freshmen Gretchen Sigman and Lilly Gillespie also made their first career appearance for the Red & Black.
 
The Fighting Illini came out firing on all cylinders, winning the first set 25-10, and Cincinnati couldn't recover from the early setback, dropping the match in three.
 
Illinois delivered 10 service aces, which disrupted UC's ability to establish a consistent attack. The Bearcats hit just .118 (28-16-102) compared to Illinois' clip of .327 (44-10-104).
