BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team earned its second straight sweep, defeating Bowling Green on Sunday inside the Stroh Center.
The Bearcats finished their season-opening tournament with a record of 2-1. Seniors Abby Walker and Katelyn Lefler were named to the Best Western Invitational All-Tournament Team. Walker averaged a monster 2.22 blocks per set to go along with 3.00 kills per set at a .382 clip. Lefler averaged 9.11 assists, 1.44 digs and 1.00 block per set at the setter position.
Cincinnati's block was on full display once again. The Bearcats totaled 15 in the win, including seven in the second set. UC was plus-22 in the category for the weekend (33-11).
Walker nearly recorded a double-double with 12 kills (.550 pct) and nine blocks. She tied her career high in blocks, which she set against Chicago State on Saturday. She finished with a team-best 17.5 points in the win.
Lefler dished out 30 assists to go along with two aces, five blocks and three digs. She guided the Bearcats to .429 and .467 hitting percentages in the second and third sets, respectively. Freshman Fallon Stewart posted her first career double-digit kill match with 11 at a .304 clip.
The Bearcats went down early, but roared back to take the first set, 25-22. With Lefler behind the service line, the Bearcats rattled off five straight points. In total, UC outscored BGSU 7-1 down the stretch.
Cincinnati carried the momentum into the second set, taking a 7-2 lead. The Bearcats later used an 8-1 run to pull away and win the frame, 25-14. The Bearcats totaled seven blocks and five aces in the second set.
Bowling Green jumped out to an early 11-6 advantage in the third set. The Bearcats responded with their defense as Ligia Williams posted three blocks in a five-point swing. Cincinnati went on to win the stanza, 25-18, behind a 11-1 scoring run.
