CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team returns to Cincinnati for a pair of non-conference matches this week. The Bearcats will travel to rival Xavier on Thursday night for the Queen City Classic. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the Cintas Center.
UC will then open the home portion of its schedule against Kent State at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The match will serve as Cincinnati's annual Tribute to #10.
SERIES HISTORY
The Bearcats own a 27-14 all-time record against their crosstown rival Xavier. The two teams met a season ago, resulting in a four-set home loss for the Bearcats. Cincinnati will look to snap a two-match losing streak to Xavier. The Musketeers have won three of the last four meetings.
LAST TIME OUT
Cincinnati went 2-1 at the Bellarmine Classic, picking up wins over IU Indy and Bellarmine. Abby Walker and Sydney Nolan earned All-Tournament accolades for their performances. Walker averaged 2.60 kills per set at a .435 clip while Nolan averaged 3.90 kills, 2.30 digs and 0.60 blocks per set.
Freshman Faith Frame averaged 4.30 digs across 10 sets played. She posted a season high of 18 digs twice, against UAB and Bellarmine.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Bearcats lead the Big 12 and rank 17th in the nation in blocks per set (2.95). In the Big 12, Abby Walker ranks fourth in blocking (1.32) and ninth in hitting percentage (.406).
FRESHMEN FILLING ROLES
The Bearcats have a trio of freshmen playing key roles. Faith Frame has earned the libero jersey, while Fallon Stewart is starting as the outside hitter, with Lilly Gillespie coming in as a defensive specialist. Frame is averaging 3.79 digs per set while Stewart is fourth on the team in both kills (2.35) and digs per set (1.53).
TRIBUTE TO #10
UC announced on August 19, 2022 that its first home match(es) will be named Tribute to #10 in honor of former volleyball student-athlete and coach Stephanie Meinig-Rosfeld. Meinig-Rosfeld was a standout middle hitter for the Bearcats from 1997-00, who also served as an assistant coach for the program before passing away in 2004.
A two-time First Team All-Conference USA selection, Meinig-Rosfeld still holds the C-USA record for total blocks (593). She also holds Cincinnati's record for most games played (502) and ranks second in program history in total blocks (593) and block assists (518).
