The University of Cincinnati volleyball team earned a four-set win over rival Xavier on Thursday night inside the Cintas Center.

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team earned a four-set win over rival Xavier on Thursday night inside the Cintas Center.

The Bearcats (5-2) shook off a slow start to defeat the Musketeers in four sets.
 
Junior Carly Glendinning posted her first career 20-piece with a team-high 21 kills at an impressive .348 hitting percentage. Freshman Fallon Stewart added a personal-best 16 kills while local product Sydney Nolan registered her first career double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs.
 
Defensively, libero Faith Frame and defensive specialist Julie Wittekind shined in the victory. Frame posted a match- and career-high 27 digs. Wittekind chipped in six digs, an ace and was perfect on service reception.
 
In the first set, the Bearcats took a 10-7 lead before the Musketeers responded with seven straight points (14-10). The run proved too large to overcome as Cincinnati dropped the opening set, 25-19. The Bearcats hit just .128 compared to the Musketeers' clip of .233. 
 
Cincinnati rattled off three straight kills, including back-to-back from Stewart, to lead 14-9 in the second set. The Bearcats scored the final five points to win the frame, 25-14. UC hit a set-high .438 with 15 kills and only one attacking error on 32 swings.
 
The third set saw 11 ties and four lead changes. With Xavier up by a point (18-17), Cincinnati scored the next three to reclaim the lead and never look back. The Bearcats outscored the Musketeers 8-3 to win the set, 25-21. Nolan accounted for five of UC's final seven points.
 
The Bearcats used a 6-0 scoring run to take control of the fourth set, going on to win the frame 25-21. Glendinning totaled seven kills while Frame posted nine digs in the stanza.
 
Cincinnati held Xavier's offense to below .100 in the final three sets.

UC will open the home portion of its schedule against Kent State at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The match will serve as Cincinnati's annual Tribute to #10.
