CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's soccer program fell to West Virginia, 2-1, in its Big 12 home opener on Thursday night.

The Bearcats achieved a new Gettler Stadium attendance record of 1,485, surpassing their previous record set in 2019.

Cincinnati suffered its first loss in conference play and moved to 4-3-1 (0-1-0) on the year, while West Virginia improved to 5-2-1 (1-0-0).

Both defenses battled hard throughout the first half. Cincinnati limited West Virginia to just two shots while managing to take seven shots themselves. Junior Coley Sidloski and freshman Jada Arthurs had great looks at goal but ultimately fell short.

The Mountaineers found offensive success first when Taylor White sent one past fifth year goalkeeper Anna Rexford in the 47th minute. WVU extended their lead with a goal from AJ Rodriguez in the 52nd minute.

Cincinnati kept on fighting and put themselves on the board in the 77th minute when junior Megan Smith nailed the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal.

The Bearcats' lineup featured three freshmen for the second time this season. Freshman Anna Barber earned her second collegiate start while Rexford remained in goal for the full 90 minutes and notched one save. She has 24 so far this season.

Cincinnati will remain home to host Kansas on Thurs. Sept. 19 for Faculty/Staff Appreciation night.
