CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team earned its fourth straight win, defeating Akron in a five-set thriller on Tuesday night inside Fifth Third Arena.
Junior Carly Glendinning powered the Bearcats to their seventh win of the season. She put down seven kills on 10 swings in the fifth and final set (.700). It marked the Bearcats' first five-set match of 2024.
Glendinning finished with a career-high 22 kills at a .388 hitting percentage (22-3-49). She has tallied 20-plus kills in two of her last three matches.
Senior Abby Walker also shined with a season-high 15 kills to go along with a match-high six blocks. She only committed one attacking error on 24 attempts (.583).
Senior Katelyn Lefler and sophomore Sydney Nolan each recorded double-doubles in the victory. Lefler registered her second of the season with season highs in assists (52) and digs (16). Nolan tallied a match- and career-high 19 digs to go along with 10 kills for her third double-double.
The Bearcats struggled on service reception to start the match, falling behind 7-0. The deficit proved too large to overcome as UC dropped the opening frame, 25-16. The Zips posted four aces and hit .484 in the first set.
Cincinnati scored three straight to jump out to a 7-5 advantage in the second frame. The Bearcats used another 3-0 stretch, highlighted by a Nolan kill and ace, to force an Akron timeout (15-11). The Zips responded and reclaimed the lead at 16-15. The two teams then traded points until Cincinnati ended the set on a 5-0 run. Fallon Stewart accounted for two kills and a block during the stretch.
The Bearcats carried their momentum into the third set, taking the frame 25-19. They used a 3-0 spurt to reach 15 first (15-11) and outscored Akron 6-2 to finish off the set.
The fourth set saw 13 ties and eight lead changes. Akron went on a late 3-0 run to claim the fourth set, 25-21.
The Zips scored four straight points to lead 11-10 in the fifth set. The Bearcats fought off match point at 15-14. Out of the timeout, UC scored the next three points to win in extras, 17-15.
