CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee enjoyed a successful campaign as part of Big 12 Civics Week.
UC's SAAC initiated a voting drive that sought to educate students on campus about the absentee ballot process (if they were out-of-state) as well as how to register to vote or make sure they were in the first place. They also worked closely with student affairs' UC Votes initiative for it.
"The Big 12 did not give us parameters for the week; we decided as a (all-schools) unit that civic engagement is very important," Hasse, UC's SAAC President, said. "The rest was at the hand of each school's committee.
It started with president Payton Hasse (women's soccer) and communications officer Lauren Ann Barnes (women's track and field) going to Texas this summer for the SAAC Development and Leadership Summit.
"We came up with type of service week for the fall semester," Barnes said. "Because the election was coming up, we wanted to set it up around civic engagement. It was the best area to focus our service."
All in all, approximately 60 students interacted with the table. Participating student-athletes included Hasse, Barnes, Devon Cherry (lacrosse), Amanda Cooper (track and field), Yu-Wei Chiang (women's golf), Georgia Mielke (dance), Thea Work (lacrosse), Brady Lichtenberg (football), Blake Podraza (track and field) and Livi Reed (dance).
Cincinnati's SAAC has representatives from all varsity sports and meet monthly during the academic year to discuss issues and legislation brought to them by their teammates, the department of athletics, the conference and NCAA.
