Cincinnati Splits Opening Day of Bellarmine Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team split its opening day of the Bellarmine Classic in Louisville, Ky.
 
The Bearcats (3-2) swept IU Indy before falling in four sets to UAB. Cincinnati won 10 sets in a row before UAB snapped the streak.
 
Cincinnati will wrap up the tournament against host Bellarmine at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
 
// IU INDY (25-16, 25-22, 25-17)
Cincinnati scored four straight to take an 18-11 advantage and force an IU Indy timeout. The Bearcats ended the first set on a 6-1 scoring run (25-16). Fallon Stewart had four kills and a block during the stretch and finished with six kills in the stanza.  
 
IU Indy jumped out to the early lead, but Cincinnati fought back to even the second set at eight apiece. The Bearcats led by as many as six before the Jaguars used a late run to pull within two (23-21). Cincinnati held on to take the stanza, 25-23, thanks to a pair of kills from Sydney Nolan.
 
Cincinnati cruised to the victory with a 25-17 third-set win. The Bearcats held the Jaguars to a set-low -.062 hitting percentage in the frame.
 
The Bearcats hit .326 and posted nine blocks in the sweep. Katelyn Lefler registered her first double-double of the season with 28 assists and a match-high 15 digs.

Abby Walker accounted for 4.5 of the Bearcats' first eight points (8-4). The Blazers made a late run to cut UC's advantage to three (23-20). Cincinnati scored the next two points to win the frame, 25-20. Walker and Nolan paced the offense with a combined 10 kills on 13 attempts (.692).
 
Cincinnati trailed by as many as three in the early going of the second set (11-8). The Bearcats slowly chipped away at the deficit and reclaimed the lead on a Lefler and Ligia Williams block. UAB responded with a 9-1 scoring run (25-21) to even the match at one set apiece.
 
UAB carried the momentum into the third set, jumping out to a 13-8 lead. The Bearcats trailed by as many as six (19-13) before pulling within one (24-23). The comeback fell short as the Blazers scored the next point. Freshman Amanda Mack saw her first career action in the stanza.
 
The Blazers took the early lead (15-11). The Bearcats fought back with a 6-1 scoring run, highlighted by a pair of kills from Nolan. Cincinnati once again pulled within one at 24-23, but UAB earned the next point and match.
 
Nolan posted a career-high 18 kills vs. UAB.
