CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Kansas State on Thursday night inside Fifth Third Arena.
The Bearcats (11-4, 2-2 Big 12) won the first two sets before falling in extra points in a five-set decision. They will now turn their attention to Saturday when they face eighth-ranked Kansas at 1 p.m.
Junior Carly Glendinning posted a match-high 20 kills to go along with a season-high six blocks. She has registered double-digit kills in 10 straight matches for the Bearcats.
Setter Katelyn Lefler recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 34 assists and 15 digs. She has notched a double-double in six of her last seven matches. She added a season-high three aces.
Reigning Big 12 Rookie of the Week Faith Frame posted her seventh straight match with double-digit digs. She finished with a team-high 18 to go along with a season-high six assists.
In the first set, UC jumped out to an early advantage (8-4) before Kansas State used a 3-0 run to even the score at 10. The Bearcats scored four straight points to force a K-State timeout (17-14). Cincinnati stayed in control for the remainder of the set, winning the frame 25-19. They outhit K-State .244 to .158.
The Bearcats used a 5-0 scoring run to take a 9-7 lead in the second stanza. The run was highlighted by a block and kill from Zeta Washington. Kansas State responded to take a 16-12 lead before UC scored six straight points to reclaim the advantage (18-16). The Bearcats went on to win the set, 25-19.
Cincinnati fell behind to start the third frame and trailed by three at the media timeout (15-12). The Bearcats trailed by as many as six before pulling within two at 23-21. The run came up short as K-State claimed the stanza, 25-22.
The fourth set saw five ties and three lead changes in the early going until K-State scored three straight (9-7). Irbe Lazda checked in for the Bearcats at that time and immediately put down a kill. The Wildcats led by three at the media timeout (15-12). Out of the break, each team traded scoring runs, with the latter being a 5-0 spurt for Kansas State (20-15). The deficit proved too large to overcome as the Bearcats dropped the set, 25-18.
Junior Caroline Endres came in to set in the fifth frame. Cincinnati went on a 3-0 run to lead 11-9 and had four match-point opportunities. Kansas State ultimately came out on the winning side in extra points, 19-17. The fifth set saw 10 ties and three lead changes.
