CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team hosted Pitt in exhibition action on Saturday and played 14 innings at UC Baseball Stadium.
Split up between an eight-inning contest and a six-inning game, Pitt won the first by a score of 10-8 and the Bearcats bounced back to win the second game 7-2.
Game one featured 24 combined hits across both teams. Cincinnati took the lead with a five-run fourth frame, but Pitt score two in the fifth, five in the sixth, and added an insurance run in the eighth to come out on top.
Three Bearcats had multi-hit efforts at the plate: Kerrington Cross, Dawson Hokuf, and Cal Sefcik. Cross and Hokuf also tallied two RBI apiece, one off the team leader in Luke Sefcik, who drove in three runs. Tommy O'Connor had the biggest swing of the first game for UC, launching the Bearcats' lone home run.
Nathan Taylor was the only Cincinnati pitcher in game one to end his outing unscathed, as he pitched a scoreless first inning.
In game two, UC piled it early with five runs in the second and two in the third. Charlie Niehaus and Derrick Pitts both led the way with two RBI apiece.
Brendon Oliver made the start and allowed one run in three innings, striking out four. Hudson Johnson, Adam Buczkowski, and Brandon Scheurer all threw one inning in relief. Buczkowski had the best outing of the bunch, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
There will still be more opportunities to catch the Bearcats in fall ball action over the next couple weeks. There are open scrimmages set for Sunday, Oct. 20, Thursday, Oct. 24, and Friday, Oct. 25. The scrimmage on Oct. 20 will be an Alumni Weekend scrimmage.
