CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati athletics department mourns the passing of Dr. Jim Ellis, O.D., who served the Bearcats faithfully for more than 40 years.
Ellis joined the department in 1979 as the team optometrist and was also a paramount stakeholder in the concussion and neuro-visual research within UC's Athletics Department. In addition, he worked very closely with the Department of Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and the Department of Neurology.
Ellis and his family established an endowed Student Athletic Trainer Scholarship in 1987, which provides scholarship support to students in the Athletic Training program in the College of Allied Health Sciences.
In 2021, Ellis was bestowed the inaugural Bob Goin Service Award at the annual Legion of Excellence event. The award is presented to a Bearcats coach, administrator or employee for distinguished service to UC Athletics.
Outside of athletics, Ellis lent his time and proficiency to University Health Services, serving as its optometrist to assist with the general student population. He often lectured about ocular trauma, one of his many areas of expertise, to residents, fellows and students.
A lover of car racing, Ellis raced in the 1,000-mile Mille Miglia in Italy, the Monte Carlo Grand Prix in Europe and the Sebring 12-hour race.
Ellis earned his bachelor's degree from Ohio State University in 1965 and his Doctor of Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1969.
Service arrangements will be announced at a later date.
