AMES, Iowa – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team fell in four sets to Iowa State on Wednesday night inside Hilton Coliseum.
After dropping the first two sets, the Bearcats (10-3, 1-1) fought back to win the third and make it a one-point game in the fourth (24-23) before falling short to the Cyclones. It marked the Bearcats' first loss in eight matches.
Fifth year Irbe Lazda made her first appearance of the season after missing the first 12 matches due to injury. She checked in during the second set and finished with six kills and four blocks. Sophomore Zeta Washington added a match-high six blocks in three sets played. UC finished with 12 blocks in the match.
Cincinnati trailed by six in the early going of the first set (12-6). The deficit proved too large to overcome as the Bearcats dropped the opening stanza, 25-19. The Cyclones were plus-14 in digs (23-9) and plus-11 in kills (19-8).
Iowa State started the second set on a 6-1 scoring run (8-3). The Bearcats were unable to get much going offensively, falling 25-13. UC hit a set-low -.098.
Lazda saw her first action in the second set and came out to start the third. Washington also checked in for the Bearcats during the second. The duo combined for seven kills in UC's third-set win.
Cincinnati used a 5-1 scoring run to even the third set at 12-all. The stretch saw a kill and two block assists from Lazda. Back-to-back kills from Washington and Lazda, followed by back-to-back solo blocks from Lazda and Glendinning, gave UC a four-point lead (21-17). The Bearcats went on to win the frame, 25-21.
Iowa State took an early lead in the fourth frame after scoring five straight points (15-10). With Nolan behind the service line, the Bearcats went on a 3-0 spurt to pull within one (18-17). Cincinnati made it a one-point game but came up short, 25-23.
