CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team visited Indiana on Saturday in its first fall exhibition game and saw several players turn in terrific performances.
The Bearcats and Hoosiers played 18 innings on Saturday. UC took the first nine against IU, 4-3, before claiming the second nine innings by a score of 11-5.
A four-run sixth inning was enough for UC in the first game. Junior Tommy Boba struck out four in three scoreless innings, and sophomore Carson Marsh tossed a scoreless sixth inning to help the cause. At the plate, seniors Kerrington Cross, Donovan Ford, and Brandon Scheurer all drove in runs in the decisive sixth frame. Senior Dawson Hokuf had a hit and walked twice in the first game, and Ford was the lone Bearcat with a multi-hit effort.
In game two, freshman Ryan Tyranski turned in a 3-for-4 game with two home runs, including a first-inning grand slam. Sophomore Jack Natili left the yard as well and went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Tyranski's homer set the tone in the second game and Cincinnati continued to pile it on in the latter half of the game, scoring three in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one run each in the seventh and eighth.
The Bearcats were patient at the plate, drawing 12 walks. Sophomore Cal Sefcik and freshman Parker McDaniels both walked twice.
Freshman Derrick Pitts went 2-for-4 with a couple RBI and a walk as well.
On the mound, junior Chase Horst opened the game with a scoreless frame and freshman Ty Barnett (3.0 IP, four strikeouts) and redshirt junior Keegan Allen (1.1 IP, one strikeout) both kept the Hoosiers off the scoreboard during their outings.
Cincinnati will host Pitt on Saturday, Oct. 12 at UC Baseball Stadium in exhibition action. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
