CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team put up a valiant effort against No. 16-ranked Baylor on Wednesday afternoon in Fifth Third Arena.
The Bearcats (14-14, 5-12) took the opening set and forced a fifth before falling to the Bears (21-7, 13-4).
Senior Katelyn Lefler delivered an all-around performance with 41 assists, six kills and seven digs. Sophomore Sydney Nolan totaled 20 kills at a .320 hitting percentage. It's her second time with 20-plus kills in the last three matches.
Defensively, redshirt sophomore Ligia Williams posted the first 10-block match by a Bearcat since 2018. Two were solo stuffs.
Freshmen duo Faith Frame and Lilly Gillespie combined for 41 of Cincinnati's 72 digs. It was the first 20-dig match of Gillespie's career and the sixth of Frame's.
Cincinnati jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set after a block by Williams and freshman Fallon Stewart. A 3-0 run by Baylor evened the score at 10-all. Out of the timeout, Cincinnati put down three straight kills to remain in front for the remainder of the set, 25-18. Nolan totaled six kills, while Frame had nine digs in the stanza.
The Bearcats used a timeout trailing 7-2 in the second set. Cincinnati pulled within two (12-10), before Baylor scored four straight (17-11). The deficit proved too large to overcome as the Bearcats dropped the second set, 25-16.
A trio of blocks helped UC take a five-point edge in the third set (13-8). Baylor used a five-point run to take the lead at 19-17. The Bearcats fought back to even the set at 20-all. The two teams traded points until Baylor scored back-to-back to win it, 25-23.
UC got out to the early advantage in the fourth frame (16-11). Two kills from Nolan pushed the lead to seven (21-14). A trio of errors from BU gave UC the set win, 25-17. Cincinnati hit .458 with 12 kills and only one error on 24 attempts.
Baylor led 8-5 as the two teams traded sides. Cincinnati scored the next point, but the Bears immediately answered with the next four (12-6). The Bearcats could not overcome the early deficit, falling in the fifth set 15-6.
