CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team earned a 66-54 victory over UIC in its season opener on Tuesday night in Chicago.
The Bearcats (1-0) were led by senior transfer point guard Tineya Hylton. She scored a career-high 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting. She went 8-of-9 from the free throw line and added a team-high four assists.
Fifth year forward Jillian Hayes picked up where she left off with her 24th career double-double. She recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
Chloe Mann, Alliance Ndiba, Ramiyah Byrd and Daylee Dunn all made their Bearcat debuts. Ndiba, a transfer from Arizona Western, posted 10 rebounds while Mann, the lone true freshman, chipped in eight points and three boards.
Cincinnati shot 46% from the floor (23-50 FG) and held UIC to 28.3% from the field (17-60 FG) and 25% from 3-point range (5-20 3FG). The Bearcats went 19-of-28 from the free throw line (.679). The two teams attempted a combined 48 free throws in the contest.
UC jumped out to an 8-3 lead at the first quarter media timeout. Hylton accounted for six of the Bearcats' first 10 points. The Bearcats ended the period on an 8-0 run to lead 16-5.
UIC went on a 7-0 run over two minutes to pull within three in the second quarter (20-17). Hayes scored back-to-back buckets to break the scoring drought with under five minutes remaining in the first half (22-17). Cincinnati finished the half 6-of-6 from the field to hold a six-point edge (33-27). Hylton paced the Bearcats with 10 points (4-8 FG) while Hayes had eight and six at the break.
UIC pulled within four with 7:36 on the clock in the third quarter (38-34). UC quickly responded with a 6-0 spurt, all coming via the charity stripe, to extend its advantage back to 12 (48-36). With one quarter remaining, the Bearcats owned a 10-point lead (56-46).
Cincinnati took its largest lead of the game with 1:57 left in the fourth quarter (65-49). The Bearcats went on to win their season opener, 66-54.
