CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball program secured the series sweep of West Virginia as the Bearcats defeated the Mountaineers in straight sets on Thursday for Education Day inside Fifth Third Arena.
The Bearcats improve to 13-9 overall and 4-7 in the Big 12. It marked UC's second sweep of a conference opponent this season. In addition, head coach Molly Alvey earned her 200th win at Cincinnati.
Cincinnati hit .407 in the match behind 35 assists from setter Katelyn Lefler. The Bearcats improved to 13-1 when they outhit their opponent.
All the Bearcat attackers had efficient showings on offense. Sophomore Sydney Nolan led the team with 12 kills at a .550 clip. She only had one attacking error on 20 attempts. Abby Walker (9k, .615), Carly Glendinning (9k, .375), Fallon Stewart (8k, .211) and Zeta Washington (6k, .500) also shined.
Cincinnati defended strong with Faith Frame (eight digs) and Julie Wittekind (nine digs) in the backrow, combining for 17 digs. The Bearcats were plus-13 in the category (32-19).
UC claimed the first stanza, 25-16, behind a set-high .600 hitting percentage. The Bearcats ended the frame on an 8-1 scoring run. Nolan paced the offense with five kills at a .714 clip. The Bearcats opened up the second and third sets with 4-0 runs. Cincinnati went on to win the two frames by scores of 25-22.
