LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Cincinnati fell to Louisville, 11-9, on Wednesday afternoon inside Louisville Lacrosse Stadium.

Despite trailing by as many as six goals, the Bearcats cut the deficit to one thanks a strong second half offensive effort. However, Cincinnati was ultimately unable to bounce back from a first quarter shutout.

Sophomore Paige Counts ended the first quarter scoring drought with back-to-back goals, her first of the season.

After the break, Freshman Paige Selhorn was able to find the back of the net for her first collegiate goal early in the third quarter.

Continuing the offensive momentum, graduate student Lauren Ottensmeyer nailed one passed the goalie, putting Cincinnati within three, midway through the third quarter. Just a minute later, Ottensmeyer found herself in position once again, scoring her second goal of the day to cut the deficit to two.

Sophomore Hailey Joy Simpson put the Bearcats within one with an impressive free-position goal. Louisville promptly responded with a goal from Reese Whiteman to expand the Cardinals lead.

Louisville notched three straight goals before junior transfer Sophia Passa ended the run with her first goal as a Bearcat, placing UC back within three. Two straight goals from Simpson and Ottensmeyer inched Cincinnati back within one with just over five minutes left to play.

The Cardinals secured their win with a crucial goal by Negai Nakazawa, putting them on top, 11-9, with 1:24 left.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hailey Darko played valiantly, notching a career-high eight saves. Cincinnati dropped to 0-2 on the season, while Louisville improved to 2-0.

The Bearcats return home to take on the Robert Morris Colonials on Saturday inside Nippert Stadium. Opening draw is set for noon.
