LAS VEGAS, Nev. – No. 23 Cincinnati wrapped up its four-game series at UNLV with a 7-6 loss against the Rebels on Monday night.

The Bearcats led, 6-4, after scoring four runs in the top of the fifth, but the Rebels tied the game in the seventh and scored in the eighth to go up by a run. After mounting an impressive ninth-inning comeback on Sunday, UC was unable to pull the same trick two days in a row.

Sophomore Cal Sefcik led the way at the plate, reaching base four times and recording one of UC's two extra-base hits. Senior Tommy O'Connor had the other extra-base hit, a double, and senior Donovan Ford reached twice out of the leadoff spot.

Three different pitchers saw time on the mound on Monday, with senior Rodney Shultz making his first start as a Bearcat. Freshman Hudson Johnson and redshirt junior Joel Pineiro also pitched; Johnson had the best outing of the bunch, striking out three in 3.2 innings of work while allowing just one run.

Next up for Cincinnati is a four-game series at UC San Diego beginning this Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Cincinnati wasted no time on Monday night, scoring a run in the top of the first. Kory Klingenbeck notched the first hit of the game, then Jack Natili walked to put runners on first and second. Tommy O'Connor's chopper to first base resulted in a throwing error that allowed Klingenbeck to score easily.

In turn, UNLV responded promptly with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1. The Rebels added another run in the third on an RIB fielder's choice to up their lead to 4-1.

The Bearcats reclaimed the lead in the middle innings, scoring one in the fourth and four in the fifth. The fifth inning featured an RBI single from Cal Sefcik, a bases-loaded walk drawn by Quinton Coats, a sac fly from Charlie Niehaus, and a wild pitch that scored Christian Mitchelle.

The Rebels tied the game at 6-6 with two runs in the seventh. A two-out solo home run was quickly followed by an RBI double to even the score.

The eventual winning run scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth.
