CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati lacrosse team utilized an 8-2 scoring advantage in the second quarter to break it open and defeat Xavier, 18-11, on Wednesday in a rare night game.
It marks Cincinnati's third out of six contests in which it had 15 goals. UC improved to 3-3, with Xavier falling to 0-2. It was also the second meeting all-time between the crosstown rivals, with UC winning 20-1 last March.
Lauren Ottensmeyer's behind-the-head goal at 8:22 in the second quarter gave UC a 7-3 lead. It also marked her fifth hat trick in a row. Ally Keith set it up by causing the turnover, then feeding to a sprinting Alexis Rich who took it all the way to the offensive zone.
Sophia Passa got on the board in the final minute of the first half with a free-position goal, giving Cincinnati an 11-4 lead. Xavier answered with three seconds left to close with some momentum.
Paige Selhorn fed Paige Counts with 4:10 left in the third quarter for a 14-6 lead.
Ottensmeyer (5), Hailey Joy Simpson (3) and Selhorn (first-career hat trick) led the scoring column, with Selhorn adding three assists, the freshman's fourth game with that many already.
Cincinnati begins a two-game road swing at Central Michigan on Sunday at noon.
