CINCINNATI – The seventh-largest home crowd in Cincinnati Baseball history saw the Bearcats defeat the Miami RedHawks by a score of 12-3 on Tuesday night.
A beautiful night for baseball enticed 2,188 fans to come to UC Baseball Stadium, the largest crowd since 2023. The victory was also the sixth in a row for Cincinnati (11-6), its longest winning streak since 2016.
Miami started the scoring on Tuesday with a two-run homer in the top of the first, but it was the Bearcats who took advantage of the long ball the best. Juniors Landyn Vidourek and Christian Mitchelle and redshirt freshman Charlie Niehaus all slugged home runs, with Niehaus' grand slam in the sixth inning providing the biggest reaction of them all. It was the first home run of his career for the West Chester native.
Cincinnati's first homestand was a successful one as it went undefeated in six games. UC hit .393 as a team and slugged .621 while posting a 2.60 team ERA. Vidourek was incredible at the plate, hitting .500 (12-for-24) with four home runs, 11 RBI, and 11 runs scored. Sophomores Cal Sefcik (.579) and Jack Natili (.565) hit better than .500 over the six games.
Natili and Sefcik both had three-hit games on Tuesday, while Mitchelle and senior Lauden Brooks both collected two hits apiece. Redshirt senior Kerrington Cross, operating out of his normal position in the leadoff spot, reached base three times to help set the table for the Bearcats' offense.
Freshman Hudson Johnson earned the win, striking out five in 2.1 scoreless frames. He was one of six UC pitchers to see time on the mound against the RedHawks.
Big 12 Conference play begins this weekend for the Bearcats as they are set to travel to Arizona for a three-game series.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Miami opened the scoring with a home run in the top of the first, taking a 2-0 lead before the Bearcats stepped into the box. The lead didn't last long though, as Cincinnati scored three in the bottom of the first. Landyn Vidourek's monster two-run homer to right field tied the game at 2-2, and Lauden Brooks' RBI groundout gave UC the lead.
After allowing two runs in the first, Brandon Scheurer sent the RedHawks down in order in the second, then Hudson Johnson entered the game and tossed 2.1 scoreless frames.
Christian Mitchelle added to the lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2, then the Bearcats put up back-to-back four-run innings. Brooks and Mitchelle both laced two-run singles into the outfield to highlight the fifth inning, and Niehaus' grand slam was the exclamation point in the sixth. Cal Sefcik reached on a triple to get things going, then Dawson Hokuf was hit by a pitch and Brooks walked to load the bases. Facing a 3-1 count, Nieuahus drove one to deep left field that cleared the wall and gave him the first home run of his career.
Rodney Shultz put up scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth to seal the deal.
