TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team opened its series at Arizona on Friday night with a 8-3 loss.
It was the first-ever meeting between the Bearcats (11-7, 0-1) and Wildcats (13-4, 1-0), and the first-ever Big 12 Conference game for Arizona.
Cincinnati grabbed an early lead, but an eight-run sixth inning for Arizona proved to be the difference.
The loss snapped the Bearcats' six-game winning streak.
Junior Christian Mitchelle and redshirt senior Kerrington Cross both had two-hit nights and each player drove in a run as well. Cross had a double, as did senior Tommy O'Connor, with the duo providing the lone extra-base hits for UC.
Six different pitchers saw time on the mound, including redshirt senior Brandon Scheurer, who made the start. He struck out one in 2.2 innings of work and started his second straight game after getting the nod vs. Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday.
Game two on Saturday is set for 9:00 p.m. ET.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Cincinnati scored twice in the top of the second to take the first lead of the night. Christian Mitchelle's RBI single to left field brought in the first run, and shortly after Lauden Brooks scored on a passed ball to put UC on top 2-0.
Kerrington Cross added to the lead with an RBI double in the top of the fourth to make it 3-0. Arizona loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, but Adam Mrakitsch was able to escape unscathed to keep the lead at three. The bases were loaded by the Wildcats again in the fifth, but a 5-2 double play was followed by an inning-ending interference call as a batter ball struck the Arizona runner heading from first to second.
The Wildcats grabbed control with an eight-run sixth inning. All but one of the runs were scored with two outs, and the big swing came off the bat of Garen Caulfield, who launched a grand slam over the wall in left field.
The Bearcats were unable to bounce back over the final three innings and were retired in order in the top of the ninth to close things outs.
