TicketsTEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team (6-7) was unable to overcome Arizona State, falling 4-0, at the Whiteman Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Sun Devils claimed the doubles point with a 6-1 victory on court one and a 6-2 win on court two.
Court three went unfinished as graduate student Zeynep Erman and senior Callie Flanagan were in a battle, knotted at 3-3 when the doubles point was clinched, leaving their match unfinished.
In singles, Arizona State won three matchups to clinch the match, leaving three contests unfinished.
Sophomore Sakurako Watanabe started strongly with a commanding 6-2 first set win before her opponent responded with a 6-2 victory in the second set. Their intense third set remained deadlocked at 2-2 when the match was clinched.
Flanagan showed remarkable resilience after dropping the opening set 6-2. The Overland Park, Kansas native surged back with a 6-3 win in the second set, but was narrowly behind 2-1 in the final set when officials called the match.
