TicketsCINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team (6-8) narrowly lost to BYU, falling 4-2 at the Western Athletic Club on Thursday afternoon.
The Cougars narrowly claimed the doubles point after hard-fought battles on courts two and three. BYU won 6-2 on court two and 6-4 on court three.
Court one went unfinished as junior Rozalia Gruszczynska and sophomore Gabrielle Guenther were in a battle, down 6-5 when the doubles point was clinched, leaving their match unfinished.
In singles, BYU won three matchups to clinch the match, leaving one contest unfinished.
On court No. 3, Guenther cruised to a victory with a commanding 6-3 first set win and a 7-6 (5) victory in the second set, notching her first singles win in conference play this season.
Freshman Milica Popovski claimed victory in two sets, 6-1, 7-6 (5). This marks her first singles win in conference play as well.
Sophomore Sakurako Watanabe put up a fight after dropping the opening set 7-5. She came roaring back to win the second set, 6-4, and was leading 3-2 in the final set when officials called the match.
